Can the Ecobee3 handle your heating and cooling needs?
I'm Megan Wollerton for CNET Appliances standing here with the Ecobee wi-fi smart thermostat.
Now this $249 wi-fi smart thermostat is really Ecobee's response to both Nest and Honeywell.
Up until now, Ecobee has been a professional install only brand, but when they saw Nest and Honeywell come out with their DIY versions, they thought.
They should give it a shot too.
As far as installation goes, this thermostat does require AC or common wire, like the Honeywell wi-fi thermostats and the Honeywell [UNKNOWN] thermostats that we reviewed.
But, this one comes with a power extender kit.
That's this little gizmo that you can attach directly to your HVAC to kind of be a workaround if you don't have AC wire.
That's really handy, especially if you're not a. EI wire and really want to install this yourself.
Visually it looks really nice.
It has this touchscreen, and it's interactive.
It lets you access all the features right here.
You can see the current weather in Louisville, Kentucky, which is where I live.
You can see the indoor temperature, the indoor humidity, and it has a scroll bar right on the home page so you can adjust the temperature manually.
[INAUDIBLE] Ichobi also provided a remote sensor in its kit free of charge.
This little gizmo works in concert with the smart home and away features.
That's basically, if you set your schedule to away but you happen to run back home for something and this sense that you're here it'll default back to home mode so that you're comfortable and nice and cozy when you're home, but then.
And switch back to away mode when it senses that you're away.
It can tell you the indoor temperature of the location where you put it, and it can also detect motion.
One of the coolest features of the smart thermostat is that you can access them remotely.
But if you're planning to use this one in person at all, you will be really annoyed.
Sometimes it would take up to as many as ten presses to actually respond.
It's definitely a good thing that Eco Vee apps are responsive because it's touch screen interface here on the thermostat really isn't.
Otherwise, this is a solid thermostat.
It was competitive with some of the other one's we've tested.
It's at the same price point, 249 dollars.
And it even went above and beyond in some cases, offering those little extras that make it that much nicer.
Thanks for watching this review of the ecobee 3 WiFi smart thermostat.
