Boeing patents a 'Method and system for shockwave attenuation,' aka force field
The world's largest aerospace company Boeing has been granted a patent for a Star Wars-like force field to protect vehicles and buildings from shock waves and nearby explosions.
The design for the force field is named the method and system for shockwave attenuation via electromagnetic arc.
The force field system is not designed to prevent direct impact from shells or shrapnel like you see here in this clip from Star Wars The Phantom Menace, but instead will protect a target from the damaging effects of the shockwaves from a nearby.
The system consists of the sensor that detects a shockwave generating explosion and sends a signal to an arc generator that receives that signal and ionizes a small region next to the target-.
Target, producing a plasma field between the target and the explosion, using lasers, electricity, and microwaves.
This small plasma field would differ from the surrounding environment in temperature, density, and composition, providing a buffer between the target and the explosion that reflects, refracts, absorbs, and deflects at least a portion of the shockwave.
