Amazon's MGM takeover is big for Prime Video -- but not like you'd think
Amazon just bought Hollywood studio MGM for almost $9 billion.
So surely that means you'll be able to stream tonnes of famous movies on prime video soon, right?>> No, not necessarily.
It's complicated.
Let's break it down[BLANK AUDIO]>> Everybody recognises The MGM roaring lion intro two tons of movies, James Bond, Rocky, Creed, Wizard of Oz, going with the wind, the list is huge.
4000 movies plus huge and yes, Amazon wants those movies and TV shows but not in the way you probably think.
Amazon sees it as a treasure trove for re-invention.
So reboots, sequel spin offs, other new interpretations.
We get the stream some of them on amazon prime video, sure, but others never take the Wizard of Oz.
Iconic movie.
I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.
But MGM doesn't even own it.
You'll still see that roaring lion at the beginning anytime you watch.
But two decades ago, MGM sold the Wizard of Oz and every other movie it made before May of 1986 to cable magnate Ted Turner.
That means Warner media now owns it, so All those classics, The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Singing in the rain.
Those are all on HBO Max now and Amazon doesn't get it with this deal.

Who are you?
James Bond
The giant example is James Bond, probably the Crown Jewel of MGM.
MGM does make James Bond movies and it.
He's involved with no time to die, which is the next one coming out in October.
But MGM doesn't have any creative control.
It doesn't get to make big decisions like, when is the next Bond movie going to come out?
Can there be a series spun off with a Bond film franchise, who's going to be the next bond after Daniel Craig, Amazon won't get to decide any of that.
Those rights are given to this brother and sister handed down from their father going back decades.
And that's the knotty part of this deal.
Lots of them do have movies, and other properties.
They're complicated by licensing and other restrictions.
Even like these rumors About outtakes from the apprentice, MGM a studio helped make the apprentice but it's been saying the exact same thing since Donald Trump its star was elected president.
MGM is contractually restricted from releasing any footage from the apprentice.
So what does Amazon get out of all this?
Well, again it wants to reinvent m jams catalog for the streaming age and assuming this deal closes.
Yes prime video will get more Library TV shows and movies and you'll see spin off offices reboots.
Amazon has learned that you need big, gotta see at titles to bring people in.
And you need to have a deep library to keep them there.
And so Amazon believes that by owning MGM, it can do a little bit of both.
Ultimately, this is all to sell you more batteries and toilet paper, all big Amazon decisions that have to do with prime Boiled down to Amazon wants to sell you more stuff and Prime members buy more stuff.
Amazon is betting that by buying MGM it will get more Prime members whether you come in for bond or batteries
