A first look at iLife '08

[ Music ] ^M00:00:03 >> Hi, I'm Molly Wood from CNET.com on the Apple Campus taking a first look at the newly announced iLife 08. This is the first major update to iLife in quite a while. And the main changes seem to have come in iPhoto and iMovie. IPhoto now adds the ability to classify photos as events instead of albums. So the software will automatically categorize your photos based on the day that you took them. And of course it will let you too either split those events or merge them back together if you don't want your photos organized only by the day you took them. It's kind of an interesting feature. One other major change is that it now allows you to upload directly to a new dot Mac web gallery, which is pretty cool. Notice it's something you could probably do for free with other web based photo galleries. But it integrates pretty nicely with dot Mac. Now the application that gets the biggest overhaul in iLife 08 is iMovie which apparently has been redesigned from the ground up by a brilliant engineer that Steve Jobs unfortunately declines to name. IMovie in the new iLife 08 solves one of my biggest pet peeves which is that you no longer have to import a movie from an external hard drive in order to edit it. You can now edit in place either on an internal or external hard drive which I think is a big feature. Steve Jobs thinks that other features are more important and he may be right. For example, you can now scrub through clips using just your mouse. So you can sort of cruise through your footage faster than real time, which is a really easy way to find specific themes. It has very simple drag and drop ability. And once again, it integrates pretty nicely with the web. For example you can upload movies directly to dot Mac. And you have one click uploading to UTube where it will actually format and export your movies directly to UTube which is certain to be a very popular feature. Rounding out the rest of the suite, there are some minor changes to iDVD and a pretty cool change to the garage band app. Something called Magic Garage Band, which basically lets you use an animated interface to compose music and you can then layer on your own music or voice after that. It was described as a way for non musicians to get into Garage Band and I think it looks pretty fun. For CNET dot com, this has been a first look at iLife 08 shipping as usual with every new Mac or available for 79 dollars. I'm Molly Wood. ^M00:02:14 [ Music ]
