Toshiba TG01: Snapdragon punch

Toshiba has unveiled the TG01, a smart phone that packs more of a punch than most, thanks to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 1GHz processing platform, and aims to take on the iPhone

On Tuesday, Toshiba delivered a Snapdragon punch to the touchscreen-phone market's guts when it unveiled the TG01, a slender smart phone ready to do battle with the best phones out there. At 10mm thin, this will also be the first handset in the UK to boast Qualcomm's Snapdragon 1GHz processing platform, giving it the boost needed to make everything run smoothly.

Toshiba has developed a finger-friendly user interface for the TG01 that sits on top of Windows Mobile 6.1 and works in a similar way to HTC's TouchFlo. If it's the Internet you're after, the TG01 packs HSDPA, HSUPA and Wi-Fi -- there's even GPS so that you don't get lost. Memory-wise, there's an expandable microSD slot that can take up to 32GB, which is mightily impressive.

Ignoring the fact that we're not massive fans of Windows Mobile, we're genuinely impressed by what Toshiba has unveiled. The company has a track record of mediocre handsets that never wowed us -- but this one does. Not only is it packed with features, but we think the rather exciting Snapdragon could give Windows Mobile a much-needed kick up the backside. Expect more info soon.
