ONI Systems to acquire Finisar technology

ONI Systems, a metropolitan optical hardware maker, has agreed to acquire technology from Finisar, an optical subsystem and component maker. ONI will incorporate technology from Finisar's Opticity product line for use in the Online2500, ONI's new optical product. The Online2500, which will first be available during the second quarter with widescale shipments planned for the third quarter, allows carriers to deliver high-bandwidth network connections directly to a business customer's office building. The product marks a first for ONI, which previously only offered products designed to allow carriers to aggregate large amounts of network traffic in a metropolitan fiber-optic network. ONI will pay Finisar $50 million--$30 million in cash and $20 million in stock--for the technology. The deal, expected to close by the end of the first quarter, will boost ONI's 2001 revenue by $15 million.
