The camera on the Mi Mix Fold uses liquid lens technology.

Xiaomi is throwing its hat in the foldable phone ring. During a virtual event on Tuesday, the Chinese company introduced the Mi Mix Fold, its first foldable phone.

The Mi Mix Fold has two displays: a large, 8.01-inch foldable AMOLED display when open and a 6.5-inch external display when the phone is folded. The hinge on each Mi Mix Fold, which opens and closes like a book, has been tested over 1 million times, the company said in a tweet

As for cameras, the phone features Xiaomi's new Surge C1 Image Signal Processor, which the company said is "optimized for professional photography" and uses liquid lens technology. This allows the camera to focus at a minimum distance of 3cm, then switch to 3X optical zoom and up to 30X telephoto, Xiaomi said. The Mi Mix Fold also has a 108-megapixel main camera and 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera, as well as a 20-megapixel front-facing camera.

The Mi Mix Fold also includes a Snapdragon 888 processor, a Harman Kardon quad-speaker setup, a 5,020mAh double-cell battery and speedy 67W charging support. It will come in a standard edition as well as a ceramic special edition, which has a gold middle frame and a black ceramic back with laser engraving. The Mi Mix Fold starts at 9,999 yuan (around $1,520) for the 256GB version.

Preorders for the Mi Mix Fold open on Tuesday, but the foldable phone will only be available in China. A representative for Xiaomi confirmed that the Mi Mix Fold won't be coming to global markets.

Xiaomi showed off the Mi Mix Fold just one day after launching the Mi 11 Ultra, Mi 11 Lite and Mi 11 Lite 5G during a virtual event on Monday.
