Short Take: Tellabs introduces new optical switches

Tellabs, a communications equipment maker, introduced a new high-end optical switch. The Titan 6700, supposedly the industry's largest optical switch, can carry 10 terabits of traffic, or 80 million simultaneous Internet calls. The switch will serve as the foundation for Tellabs' new line of optical products, which will feature a variety of bandwidth management and other tools for communications carriers. Field trials will begin during the second quarter with commercial availability by late 2001.
