Short Take: Lucent aims to recover market share
Lucent Technologies unveiled a come-from-behind optical networking strategy to re-take market share it lost to Nortel Networks in a certain niche of the market. Lucent announced the WaveStar DataExpress 10-gigabit-per-second (Gbps) optical system, hoping to close the gap in the 10-Gbps market in which Nortel leads. Communications company Metromedia Fiber Network will be the first test site for the new system, with four other European carriers also signing up as customers, according to Lucent. Of the eight announced products, five will ship by the end of March and three more will ship by the end of the summer, according to the company.
