Samsung's 'next Galaxy' phone -- sure to be the fabled Galaxy S3 -- will be powered by a quad-core processor, the South Korean tech monster has confirmed.

The Exynos 4 Quad chip boasts a mind-expanding four cores, and according to Samsung will be clocked at speed over 1.4GHz, CNET reports.

"Already in production", Samsung boasts, "the Exynos 4 Quad is scheduled to be adopted first into Samsung's next Galaxy smart phone that will officially be announced in May."

That May date doubtless refers to the 3 May Samsung event right here in London, where we're nigh-on certain to get a glimpse at the follow-up to the wildly popular Galaxy S2. Only seven days to wait now -- hold tight gadget fans.

I wasn't expecting Samsung to send its flagship phone into the wild with anything less than a seriously muscular chip -- and every rumour so far has pointed to the S3 sporting quad-core tech -- but it's good to get confirmation from Samsung itself.

The S3 won't be the first phone on the scene with a quad-core processor -- the HTC One X is already on sale and flexing its muscles.

A potent processor means snappier gaming and smoother video, but as my oh-so-wise colleague Natasha Lomas points out in her review of the One X -- finding apps that exploit the potential of these powerful new chips is a tricky business.

As such, Samsung's next effort will need more than just data-crunching prowess to win my affection. Here's hoping it delivers in the design, display and camera stakes too.
