Guide to putting DVD movies on the iPhone/iPod touch

Ben Wilson

HandBrake, a free Mac OS X/Windows utility for ripping videos from DVDs and saving them in various formats -- including MP4 files that are playable by the iPhone/iPod Touch -- has been updated to include the ability to generate iPhone-compatible anamorphic video at its full size. As such, we've put together a quick guide for moving DVD video to the iPhone/iPod touch.

  • Insert the desired DVD into your computer's optical drive
  • Download HandBrake and launch the application
  • You should be presented with a prompt to open a source. If not, select File > Open Source and choose your DVD.
  • Select Presets > Update Presets.
  • Click the "Toggle Presets" button in the upper right corner of the main window.
  • Select iPhone/iPod Touch from the resulting list
  • Click the "Start" button in the upper-left of the main window
  • Click the "Show Queue" button, then the arrow next to your movie's name. This will tell you where HandBrake is saving the resulting .MP4 file. Under Mac OS X, it's the Desktop by default. Wait until the video has been saved.
  • Launch iTunes, and select File > Import. Choose the MP4 file created by HandBrake
  • Connect your iPhone/iPod Touch and select it in iTunes.
  • Go to the "Video" tab and make sure that the "Sync Movies" box is checked, and your newly created MP4 file is selected.
  • Click the "Sync" button

Your movie should now be stored on your iPhone/iPod Touch and available for viewing.
