Former Lucent exec joins PCCW

Hong Kong telecom company Pacific Century Cyberworks has appointed a new chief operating officer, Michael J. Butcher. The former Lucent Technologies president for International Operations replaces William Cheung Kam Hung, who after one year has resigned "to spend more time with his family," PCCW said Monday in a statement. Over the past 30 years in the IT industry, Butcher was president and chief executive for Lucent's Asia-Pacific operations based in Hong Kong, as well as president for Electronic Data Systems in Australia and New Zealand. He also worked for Datapoint and Alcatel. Late last month, PCCW laid off 858 employees, or 6.1 percent of its total work force in the country, in its second major round of job reductions. The company had eliminated 506 positions last December. Irene Tham reported from Singapore.
