Wireless technology from New York-based U.S. Wireless Data will let customers use credit cards to buy Pepsi soft drinks out of vending machines, the companies announced Thursday. The technology is being tested on about 20 vending machines in Memphis, Tenn., with plans to expand the program to 200 machines by the end of January, according to Daniel Lamb, a spokesman for U.S. Wireless. The technology will also provide inventory information via a Web browser. Similar technology allowing people to make small payments at gas pumps or vending machines has become increasingly popular.
