The Droid X compared with the EVO 4G and iPhone. Android Forums

Verizon Wireless and Motorola are in what appear to be the final stages of preparation for their next handset releases. According to Boy Genius Report, the Droid X will surface sometime in July, with the Droid 2 bowing a month later. Both phones could steal the spotlight back from HTC's Evo.

Formerly rumored as the Droid Shadow and Droid Xtreme, the touch-only Droid X features a massive 4.3-inch display. Although that's equal to the screen on the EVO 4G, the Droid X's body is a touch thinner and taller. And with the four buttons across the bottom of the phone, the Droid X might feel more natural in hand than its wider HTC counterpart.

A recently leaked commercial treatment also indicates that the phone will offer 720p HD playback, HDMI output, and an 8-megapixel camera with a dual-LED flash. Other rumored specs include 8GB of internal memory and a 700MHz OMAP3630 processor, and the Droid X is expected to run Android 2.1 with a modified version of Motoblur when it arrives next month.

Turning to the Droid 2, we learned today that the processor will now be running at 1GHz, considerably faster than the 750MHz I told you about just last week. The source of this information also comes from an alleged commercial that makes mention of the speed in a voice-over. The TV spot also references the more intuitive keyboard, and Outlook Exchange support.

As a reminder, the Droid 2 is also expected to have 3.7-inch touch screen and a 5-megapixel camera. Like the Motorola Droid, the Droid 2 will run Android 2.1 when it arrives in August. That could change, of course, if Motorola fast-tracks 2.2. Frozen yogurt sounds delicious on hot summer days.
