2008 Subaru Outback
>> Subaru's cars, they aren't just about four wheel drive and a flat Boxer engine anymore. Let's check the tech of this rather nice Outback 2 point 5 XT.

Starting on the LCD screen, you see we do have navigation. I've got this to say about the destination and the mapping. It just doesn't look very good. I mean that is a blurry mess. I've gone to the menu, I look at the map. It looks like just a blur. It's just not a good looking screen. So that really annoys me because you can't change that out obviously. You're buying what you're going to have in this car for a number years. So that to me is a big disappointment. It is a touch screen, though. You've got the ability to hit very large clear buttons. I do like that about the interface. So mixed bag on the display and the navigation system that is the primary function of it. Let me show you some other things that they do with the display here. Subaru gives you a variety of these information screens. You can go over here on the far left and you've got a rather elaborate average and instantaneous fuel consumption bar gauge. Over here you've got a couple of trip computers. Here is an extended set of virtual gauges that you can be running. So you've got your average fuel consumption, your acceleration percent. Here of course the all important calculator with unit conversion, gallons to liters, foot to meters, what have you. The audio system is a six disk changer, MP3 and WMA capable. I like that. There's an auxiliary input jack that lives down here inside the console. You know basic stuff now a days. Let's talk about the sources though. Aside from that Auks, which you have on a rocker here, AM FM, no HD radio, satellite radio is the selection here on the bottom, depending on which Subaru materials you can either get XM or Sirius or just XM. Hmmm, a little bit of vaguery there, so check with the dealer before you take delivery of one of these guys. It does have SRS Wow, which is a synthetic surround technology. That's the button right here. You just lean on that for a second and the surround icon comes on. The next piece of tech on our tour is here in the transmission. Now we have an automatic in this car. Five speed automatic which sport shift. That's part of a whole package that I mentioned earlier that includes our navigation system. This is kind of cool. The SI Drive, Subaru Intelligent Drive knob. You've got three modes here. There's sport which gets you into a moderating more accelerated torque curve and power delivery. Then you've got sport sharp with a sharp symbol like you're a musician. And there's also a bottom for that up here on the steering wheel. And then if you push it, you go to intelligent and that's your every day driving mode. You really feel a difference in the acceleration and the way the car behaves. But again, this stuff is being done with the engine management chip largely, which is one of the miracles of today's cars. A button can change the personality of a power train. Now, all the power going into this gear box comes out of a Subaru Classic Boxer four cylinder horizontally opposed engine, turbo charge in this vehicle. Those two and a half liters are going to give you about 243 horsepower, 241 foot pounds. Pricing the Outback 2 point 5 XT, starting at 31000 dollar, then our car had a 3200 dollar package which gave us the nav, that multi information display and the automatic transmission. If you want to pick and chose, the automatic is 1200, the nav and multi information is 2000, satellite radio, either flavor apparently, about 450 bucks. And if you want to add a subwoofer, I would, 230 dollars more.
