World's first HD-DVD laptop

Tech expert Michelle Thatcher grew up surrounded by gadgets and sustained by Tex-Mex cuisine. Life in two major cities--first Chicago, then San Francisco--broadened her culinary horizons beyond meat and cheese, and she's since enjoyed nearly a decade of wining, dining, and cooking up and down the California coast. Though her gadget lust remains, the practicalities of her small kitchen dictate that single-function geegaws never stay around for long.

Toshiba recently announced that it will unveil the world's first laptop with an HD-DVD drive (and accompanying high-resolution display) at the CEATEC Japan electronics show next week. Imagine it: next time you visit your hippie cousins who don't have a TV, you can bring your high-def theater with you.

Better brush up on those Peter, Paul, and Mary lyrics, though: The laptop won't be available until early 2006, and even then (at least initially) only in Japan.
