Short Take: Gigabit standard set

The Gigabit Ethernet Alliance announced that the feature set for the standard governing 1 gigabit-per-second Ethernet technology has been finalized and no further alterations will be made. After a May meeting, the ballot process for various components of the standard will start moving up the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers chain of command. The organization also announced the addition of 10 new companies to the alliance, bringing total industry support to 108 vendors. The basic gigabit Ethernet standard remains on track for final approval in the first quarter of next year, according to alliance officials.
