Ride, shop with your cell phone
Two wireless-payment trials, TeleCab and TelePay, kicked off in Singapore on Thursday. Launched by taxi operator CityCab, the two-month TeleCab project will allow a select 1,000 of the company's registered passengers to pay for their rides by dialing a number on their mobile phones. The payment methods available are direct debit, credit card and stored value. The system's technology was developed by e-payments provider Systems@Work, with partners including Visa International and Hewlett-Packard Mobile E-services Bazaar. Participants in the six-month TelePay project at Suntec City shopping mall will be able to pay for goods and services wirelessly to 30 of the mall's 300 merchants. The merchant sends the transaction details to the project system, which then calls the buyer for authentication and authorization. Merchants will not have to pay for the equipment required during the trial, and no additional charges will be levied on consumers. The trial also makes use of technology from Systems@Work.
