Brighthand has an interesting article today about Palm and a mysterious third product category. In an interview with Business 2.0 and the Portland Business Journal, Palm's founder, Jeff Hawkins, has referred to the company's plans to create a third product category. Of course, he didn't reveal any details other than that it will feature advanced multimedia capabilities. Hmm, what could it be? Tell me your thoughts below.

In other Palm news, the company reported a 36 percent increase in profit over Q3 last year, thanks in large part to the Treo line. In Q3 2006, the company shipped a total of 564,000 Treos and increased its share in the smart-phone/PDA market from 22 percent to 30 percent, according to Canalys. Palm CEO and president Ed Colligan also reconfirmed the company's plans to release three new smart phones this year. Rumors have started to flow recently about a Treo 700p, and the latest speculation (via TreoCentral) has its release date set for May 28 on Sprint's network.

Palm will be celebrating its 10th anniversary of shipping handhelds on Monday, so check back next week for our special package, where we'll take a look at all things Palm--past, present, and future.
