The follow-up phone to the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T is coming out, and it won't be called the OnePlus 4. In fact, it will be called the the OnePlus 5, and it will come out some time this summer.

The company confirmed the news, originally reported in The Verge, to CNET.

OnePlus, a relatively unknown phone maker a few years ago, has since whipped up a cult following for its upper-midrange hardware that typically undercuts premium prices. Its last phone appeared in November.

So why is OnePlus apparently skipping 4 and going straight to 5? Speculators suggest that the number four is considered unlucky in China, where OnePlus is headquartered. Apparently the folks at OnePlus were also influenced by retired NBA player Robert Horry, The Verge said. There are reportedly two paintings of Horry, who wore the number five on his jersey, hanging in the office.

The official teases are also starting to mount. Earlier this week, CEO Pete Lau posted a teaser picture on Weibo stating that a new phone was in the works. OnePlus also released a Star Wars Day tweet on Thursday with the number four crossed out by phones meant to look like lightsabers -- perhaps hinting at the new name.

Despite all the hints, official details are still being kept under wraps. However, some info allegedly leaked when a listing for the OnePlus 5 appeared on retail site Oppomart. Rumored details include the following:

  • 5.5-inch QHD display with 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution
  • 12 megapixel dual-rear cameras, 8 megapixel front camera
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor
  • 6GB of RAM
  • Fingerprint scanner on the front

Oppomart also lists the price as $449 (approximately £346 or AU$605) and gives an estimated ship date of early June. Sounds like we'll hear more rumors and teases in the coming weeks.
