It's official: the Motorola Moto G is updating to Android 4.4.2 KitKat in the UK, complete with clever power use and photo-editing whistles and bells. Update: Fill your boots: The update has now started!

Your Moto G should already notify you that the update is available, but if not make sure you have a decent Wi-Fi or data connection, head to your settings, check About Phone and System Updates.

Android 4.4.2 KitKat adds full-screen mode, beefed-up security, and smarter power use so your battery doesn't run down as fast and your processor doesn't have to work as hard.

In a customer service forum post thingy, Motorola outlines the improvements for the Moto G: a souped-up phone dialler, printing over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Google Hangouts as your texting app. And you can edit your photos in the Gallery app, adding filters, drawing on pictures, and tweaking colour, exposure, contrast and more.

The Moto G costs just £130. Not only is it cheaper than Google's own Nexus 5, it's the first phone outside the Nexus family to get cutting-edge KitKat. Take that, Samsung.

The Moto G packs in plenty of value for money with a 720p screen, 5-megapixel camera, and a quad-core processor. It's not exactly challenging flagship phones like the HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4 or iPhone 5S in terms of sheer numbers, but you can't argue with the bottom line. After a year testing every mobile and tablet under the sun, intrepid CNET reviewer Andy named the Moto G as his favourite gadget of the year.

Does the Moto G set the bar for affordable phones? Have you had a taste of KitKat? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.
