Codeonline said it received funding from the venture capital units of AOL Time Warner, Bertelsmann and Motorola. Codeonline spokeswoman Vanessa Mota said the second round financing of $7.3 million makes the companies the top three investors in the maker of game software for wireless phones. Motorola invested in the company's first round last February, then added to its stake in the second round.
Motorola is helping Codeonline distribute games such as "Who Wants to be a Millionaire," "Trivial Pursuit," "Subbuteo" and "Zobmondo" so cell phone users can play the games on their phones through their service provider. The company provided games to 250 million wireless subscribers and generated more than 50 million paid gaming transactions in 2001. These figures include numbers from Springtoys, the Finnish maker of mobile games and entertainment that Codeonline announced it would acquire in January.
