LG's Optimus 3D smart phone has been the talk of the blogosphere since last week, when Dutch retailer ThePhoneHouse accidentally launched a product page for the device on its website. Now LG has confirmed the device will make its public debut at Mobile World Congress in a couple of weeks' time.

The press release is somewhat terse, but offers a tantalising glimpse at the Optimus 3D's key features, which as the name indicates, are distinctly tri-dimensional.

"The LG Optimus 3D addresses the lack of 3D content issue -- one of the biggest problems facing the 3D market -- with a complete platform for a one-of-a-kind experience on a mobile device," the company blathers.

"LG's most advanced smart phone to date will feature a dual-lens camera for 3D recording, a glasses-free LCD panel for 3D viewing and diverse connectivity options such as HDMI and DLNA for 3D content sharing anytime, anywhere."

So there you have it. The handset will be demonstrated live at LG's booth at Mobile World Congress, where we should find out more information about what kind of content will be available for it.

Expect movies to be high in the mix, although with 3D handheld gaming all the rage thanks to the upcoming Nintendo 3DS, we wouldn't be surprised to see some games developers showing off their wares too.

One key question, though, is where we'll buy these 3D movies and games from. LG could launch its own 3D-focused store for this device -- and future 3D-capable smart phones -- which seems like a sensible way of helping people to make the most of the screen.

The dual-lens 3D camera has plenty of potential for home movies too: expect the Optimus 3D's release to spark a run on blue body paint in DIY shops up and down the land, as people scramble to shoot their own Avatar tributes. Possibly.
