AT&T (formerly SBC) and BellSouth are lobbying Congress to allow them to build a faster Internet that they could then charge Web sites to use. If a Web site didn't pay the protection money, the telcos would degrade the speed at which the content came to users. The telcos say they need to be compensated for building out high-speed fiber-optic lines. Yes, they've done such a good job, too. You have yours, right?
