Entry-level Samsung Galaxy Music due in October
Rumors suggest that Samsung will debut a single-core Android handset with incredibly basic features. The big question is, why?
Samsung is expected to announce a new Galaxy Music smartphone on October 11, according to multiple reports from this week.
Despite the obvious promise of music, the handset should have only basic hardware. Features are said to include a 3-inch QVGA (240x320-pixel) display, a single-core 850MHz processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, and a 3-megapixel camera. It should run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and come in single-SIM and dual-SIM models.
I'm having a hard time understanding what Samsung is doing with the Galaxy Music, seeing as how this is such outdated hardware. While I understand that it will help to keep prices down, it's more than two steps backward.
Even early Galaxy Players have larger displays, more memory, and faster processors. That said, the front-facing stereo speakers must be something special.
Considering we're talking about single- and dual-SIM variants of the Galaxy Music, I suspect we'll not see this come to the United States. There have been a number of dual-SIM Galaxy phones released under the Duos name, many of which end up in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and emerging markets. Toss in the fact that Galaxy Music is slated to debut at one of Samsung's German retail stores and this seems even more likely.
