3Com (COMS) today introduced firewall software for its NetBuilder line of routers, hoping to catch a piece of the booming market for security in intranet environments.

With the announcement, 3Com hopes to address the need for security features in wide area network routers. These routers, the point where internal networks and the Internet intersect, are one of the most likely points of entry for hackers and unauthorized users, according to Brad Turner, product manager for NetBuilder router software at 3Com.

The 3Com firewall interoperates with host-based firewalls for complete security. Administrators can also configure the software to accept only certain types of traffic as a security precaution. The firewall works at the packet level so that incoming data can be analyzed individually for authentication purposes.

The new firewall is available now and is provided free with version 9.1 of 3Com's NetBuilder software. It is certified by the National Computer Security Association.
