Storage
[ Music ] ^M00:00:02 >> Hello, this is Dong Ngo for CNET.com and today we take a look at the StorCenter ix2 NAS server from Iomega. This is a really compact NAS device. It's probably as compact as a NAS that support two regular sized hard drive can be. It's barely larger than two 3.5-inch hard drive put together. The StorCenter ix2 come with two hard drives. You can choose to have a 1-terabyte or 2-terabyte version of the NAS server, but you can't change the hard drive by yourself. On the front the StorCenter has nothing but a blue status light that actually really bright, enough to be annoying if you want to keep your room completely dark. On the back, you're gonna find the Gigabit Ethernet port and two USB ports. These USB ports can be used to host webcams, printers, external hard drives and for the first time Bluetooth adapters. The StorCenter is the first NAS server I've ever tested that supports Bluetooth. You first though needed a Bluetooth adapter, such as the Kensington Micro adapter here and plug it into one of the USB ports. Now you can send data from your cell phone or any other Bluetooth device unto the internal storage of the NAS server. The StorCenter ix2 is also the first NAS server that supports external hard drive formatted in NTFS file system both read and write. This is significant as other NAS server can only read these file systems if at all, but not write to it. On the inside, the StorCenter ix2 comes with a very intuitive web interface possibly the most user-friendly interface among NAS service I have tested. For the first time I believe this device can be set up and used by a complete novice. On the downside however, the StorCenter ix2 doesn't support any way for you to access it over the Internet. Iomega says it might add dysfunction in the next Firmware update. In our testing, it's true to performance was rather slow especially when set up in RAID 1 configuration. In other configuration, however, it performed better, but still not impressive. You can get the 1-terabyte StorCenter ix2 now for $299 or pick a 2-terabyte version for $479. Don't forget to read our full review of the product at CNET.com. My name is Dong Ngo and this has been the First Look at the StorCenter ix2 NAS server from Iomega. ^M00:02:23 [ Music ]
