3 new iPhones, a new Apple Watch and an early surprise
Hi everybody I'm Shara Timken.
And I'm Scott Stein.
We're in Cupertino for Apple's iPhone 11 launch.
Scott what do you think was the biggest news today?>> I was surprised.
The iPad was announced here because I know there were there were hints of that.
But you don't usually see iPads at an iPhone event and we were thinking that iPads are gonna come in October.
Maybe they don't, maybe that was the iPad for the fall and Apple updated as expected the 9.7 inch entry iPad to a nice 10.2 inch model that supports a smart keyboard cover with that smart connector, same original pencil.
That was interesting to see and also I think it's interesting how close the 11 is to the pro.
I knew we were kind of expecting that but they really do feel like one line.
Yeah so I mean let's talk about that.
So we saw three new iPhones here which is basically what we were expecting.
Yeah.
I think that what is really interesting is the iPhone 11.
And just the pricing.
So that's $50 less than the iPhone XR which is huge cuz Apple's just been increasing prices we haven't really seen them lower them at all.
No.
Yeah, I think that was really interesting.
And I feel like between that and the XR lowering price, the iPhone 8.
Now, it feels that with the naming of the pro in particular, it feels like they're trying to push the expensive models into their own little echelon.
Yeah.
And that's an interesting position as opposed to saying, here's the new iPhone.
Guess you got to pay up.
That's a pretty big gap now between 699 and 999.
And really, it seems other than case.
The big difference is the telephoto camera.
Yeah.
It's not a gigantic.
We'll have to see when we test it, but I feel like a lot of things are going for the iPhone 11.
Yeah, I mean, I think it's interesting how they were trying to position it as more of a creator device like really showing what you can do with video and photos.
Yeah.
So I think that they're seeing it more as something like, you know, like a media outlet or somebody you know, would maybe you offer these because you're going to be creating content.
You're not just like living your normal daily life.
Absolutely.
But it seems like that as the day went on, I started to realise like The differences between those two were diminishing we're to the point where I think they were showing the Pro is the pro camera and then you think about the 11th cameras and processor should enable a surprising amount of that same stuff.
Yeah, I mean and fluffy on all of them.
You can do this low fee and there are things like stabilization and like the even some of the stuff like deep focus, which seemed like a pro feature Is coming to the 11th.
So there's a lot of stuff there.
It's just that it's missing the telephoto, which is the thing I actually use the most in the field.
I don't know how I would use ultra wide that seems like something people would be much less inclined To its pick.
So I mean the other big news, Apple Watch.
Interesting thing with the Series 5 is kind of the always on display so if you're keeping that on all the time now.
And I feel like nobody really saw that coming.
I didn't hear that discussed and it seemed like maybe it was just gonna be cases and that's a pretty significant update because we talked about that as a really key, I've loved watched that have always on displays.
Going back to the pebble, and the Apple Watch gets it.
I like that doesn't impact battery life.
Yeah.
It's an interesting question going forward.
What else that will enable.
Compass.
I'd love to see how it lays out.
I like the international SOS thing.
Although, you will have to get the cellular model which is next $100 insurance policy.
Other than that pretty straight forward.
But always on is a nice overdue feature.
I mean, with battery the apple watch is the same.
But it was really interesting.
The new iPhone's battery life is dramatically better.
The 11 Pro I think is four hours better than the Xs.
And then the Max is
Five hours better
Five hours better which is huge.
Yeah that's huge.
And it'll be interesting to see which one comes on top when they cut it all mayb even out a lot more.
There's a lot of little updates here, so it's like incremental.
Thing, but for the 11 it seems like it adds up to a really good phone.
Yeah, so I mean, so what do you think was missing here?
The Galaxy S10 you could basically charge another phone or your earbuds on it.
Yeah.
Now AirPods
I have wireless charging I thought that that was kind of a natural step for this phone that Yeah, you could charge up your air pods on your phone so we didn't have that.
What else?
Yeah, we didn't have that.
We did we did get a fast charger in the box for the pro but no usbc
No talk of this rumor tracker thing.
I hate to, rumors of course they pop up and then they go away but when that tracker story popped up I thought that was interesting that didn't show up.
[UNKNOWN] other people you're looking for.
On the watch no sleep tracking.
Yeah.
And
They've been telling us for years that's coming.
Yeah and you would now think that they would have to improve battery life or power efficency in some way.
And also [UNKNOWN]
Yeah.
With arcade, the new gaming, subscription service.
I was interested to see if there were any AR games.
They didn't really talk about anything like that.
No.
We didn't hear that.
But you know in terms of subscriptions I think another big surprise was.
Apple TV Plus, is that right?
Yeah, TV Plus.
Yeah, sorry all these names are going together but it's only 4.99 a month which the rumors had said 9.99 which I think was gonna be a bit of a stretch considering they don't have a lot of content to start with.
It's their own original content but it's not, that's getting to Netflix pricing but you don't have near the catalog.
But instead five bucks a month, that's cheap.
That's doable, yeah.
There's like the the death by 1,000 cuts of subscriptions.
Like subscription overload which I wrote about in like If there's a feeling of like, even $5, you're like, you're like how many of these can I really deal with and they want you to do Arcade really badly.
So it's like $10 for that,
And don't forget your iCloud
Don't forget your iCloud, don't forget all the other things in your life.
I figured that they might do some sort of a bundle and to include Apple TV plus on a new device for a year.
At least there's that.
Yeah, that's huge.
Yeah.
We were thinking at most, maybe it's three months free trial, but yeah, you're getting this for free if you buy it.
So that was the big stuff, three new iPhones, new Apple Watch, new iPad, services pricing finally, and kinda the biggest news was Some of these things are gonna cost you less than you thought.
Anyway, thanks for tuning in.
I'm Shara Tibken Messina.>> And I'm Scott Stein.>> Thank you.
