Smart ForSpeed concept (slideshow)

Mercedes will debut the electric Smart ForSpeed concept at the 2011 International Motor Show in Geneva. The concept vehicle will be shown along with the electric scooter and bicycle that debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show in September. The Smart ForSpeed shows that an electric car can be fun, sporty, and fast--for a Smart car.

With better performance and design of its pint-sized cars, Smart shows that it's getting serious about the future of electric cars.

The Smart ForSpeed concept doesn't have a roof or windows, which raises the question, if it doesn't have a roof, is it still a convertible?

The Smart ForSpeed is powered by a 16.5 kWH lithium ion battery that has a driving range of 85 miles (136 km).

It may be small and electric, but it's fast, for a Smart Car. The Smart ForSpeed accelerates from 0 mph to 37 mph (60 kph) in 5.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 75 mph (120 kph).

The interior of the two-seater is streamlined and minimalistic. But, uh-oh, only one cup holder in the center console.

Photovoltaic cells integrated into the wind deflector help charge the onboard electrical system.

The phone will be used as the infotainment system, although its placement is less than ideal for the driver.

The charging port for the Smart ForSpeed is located in the third brake light behind the Smart logo. The car battery can be charged from 0 to 80 percent in just 45 minutes.

The ForSpeed insignia can be seen on the passenger seat.

The Smart ForSpeed is fitted with 205/35 R 18 tires in the front and 235/30 R 18 tires in the rear.

The front headlights of the Smart ForSpeed concept retain the look of an eye.

A 30 kW magneto-electric motor is installed at the rear.
