Sights from the wacky Red Bull Flugtag

The Cumberland River in downtown Nashville, Tennesse was the site of the 2017 Red Bull Flugtag. 

I joined Nissan engineers Ben Myburgh, Rich Simmons, Darren Hawkins and Cullum Stirling on this crazy adventure as team Nissan Take on flight.

Part of the fun of the Flugtag are the costumes. We chose a good old fashioned 1980s theme. Frankly, I can't believe these guys agreed to wear these clothes. 

I mean, I really can't believe Myburgh agreed to wear these clothes!

Before the event started we showed off our flying rig and demonstrated to folks what it would be like to fly in a hand-built flying simulator. 

Getting the crowd fired up from the platform. 

The team spent six weeks building the non-motorized flying machine.

Stirling the pilot started off looking good.

But then he quickly plunged into the Cumberland River. 

In the end it was Team Ground Control with a Ziggy Stardust theme that took the Flugtag crown.

Team Ground Control looked good right off the platform, and glided 81 feet over the river. 

Team Back to the Street Boyz in their Delorean-inspired rig didn't make it too far. 

Holy Flugtag Batman built a rig based on the Nashville skyline. It didn't even have wings. 

The rig that Team Daddy Gator Burt built didn't even get off the platform.
