Photos: Pontiac surges in New York

Pontiac showed off renewed vigor at the 2008 New York auto show, unveiling three models. The Solstice Coupe is a hard top version of Pontiac's roadster while the G8 GXP puts massive performance in a Pontiac sedan. The sport truck version of the G8 is, as yet, unnamed.

The hard top version of Pontiac's Solstice roadster can be had in either standard or high-performance GXP versions. The GXP version gets a 2-liter variable valve timed four cylinder turbocharged engine making 260 horsepower and 260 lb-ft. of torque. Instead of a trunk, the Coupe's back glass opens up revealing a small cargo area.

Like the roadster, the Coupe doesn't offer much in the way of cabin tech. But its stereo does offer XM satellite radio and MP3 capability. The Coupe also has a targa top, released by two latches on the front and one latch on the back. The targa top is too big to store in the car, so you will have to leave it at home for open air cruising.

The new performance version of Pontiac's G8 sedan features a massive 6.2-liter V-8, making an estimated 402 horsepower at 6,000RPM, and 400 lb-ft. of torque at 4,400RPM. It keeps that power to the pavement with a multi-link MacPherson strut front suspension and four link independent rear suspension. Brembo brakes bring it to a stop. 60mph should come in 4.7 seconds.

A navigation system is optional, while a 230 watt Blaupunkt audio system with XM satellite radio is standard. A six speed manual transmission is also optional, as the G8 GXP comes standard with a six speed automatic.

Pontiac insists its sport truck is a whole new category of car, although owners of old El Caminos and Rancheros would hold a different opinion. Pontiac is letting consumers pick the name for this G8 platform truck at its www.pontiac.com/namethiscar Web site. May we suggest El Ponterero?

For interior amenities, the G8 sport truck gets Bluetooth cell phone integration and a 230 watt Blaupunkt audio system. Its LCD touch screen serves to control the stereo and climate.

I Got an Early Look at Intel's Glass Packaging Tech for Faster Chips
Rahul Manepalli, right, Intel's module engineering leader, shows a glass substrate panel before it's sliced into the small rectangles that will be bonded to the undersides of hundreds of test processors. The technology, shown here at Intel's CH8 facility in Chandler, Arizona, stands to improve performance and power consumption of advanced processors arriving later this decade. Glass substrates should permit physically larger processors comprised of several small "chiplets" for AI and data center work, but Intel expects they'll trickle down to PCs, too.
