Photos: 2008 Scion xB
The new Scion xB has lost its bold exterior creases and some of its character, but has also grown up a bit and now represents one of the best tech values we've seen in a new car.
Restyled for 2008, the Scion xB softens its edges and gets a wide C-pillar.
The grille and headlights still have a squared-off look, but the hood runs smoothly down to the grille.
The engine has also been upgraded for 2008, increasing to a 2.4-liter four cylinder.
People who liked the accidental styling of the earlier xB might not be impressed with this more self-conscious look.
The wide C-pillar doesn't do much for visibility.
The xB gets assymetrical by putting its one reverse light off to the side.
Cargo area is substantial in the new xB, offering extra space over the previous version.
The instrument cluster changes in the new car, using four centrally mounted gauges.
One nice standard feature is the xB's multifunction steering wheel, with audio controls on the left spoke.
With the automatic version, you get this shifter on the center console. It has a manual gear selection mode.
The optional navigation system is an Alpine-sourced factory installation.
The navigation has good options for destination entry.
Route guidance shows easily understood graphics indicating upcoming turns.
The LCD motors down to reveal the single CD slot.
An iPod connection is standard on the xB.
The iPod interface on the stereo works very well, emulating the look of the iPod.
The stereo plays MP3 CDs, and shows ID3 tagging information.
There are an impressive array of surround sound settings in the xB.
Headrest-mounted rear seat DVD units were a surprise in our xB.
