10th-gen Honda Civic concept looks very next gen (pictures)

Honda surprised press during a preview day for the 2015 New York auto show by unveiling a new generation of its compact Civic model in concept form.

The concept was presented as a two-door coupe with youthful styling, a departure from the current, mature-looking Civic.

Honda tends to stick pretty close to its concept designs when they hit production.

Big air intakes line the front, below LED headlights, which could make it to the production version.

Although Honda showed the coupe version, the company said it would be releasing a full range based on this design, including a four-door and a hatchback.

More exciting, Honda promises not only an Si version, but also a high performance Civic Type-R for the US.

The new Civic will come with a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine using direct injection to maximize power and efficiency.

Transmission options will include a continuously variable transmission and a six-speed manual with short throws.

The large wing on the back and the center exhaust may be reserved for sport versions, such as the Si and the Type-R.

The Civic remains a front-wheel-drive car.

Hatchback and four-door versions will require a higher roofline at the rear.

Honda will offer a rearview camera and its Lane Watch technology, which shows the driver a camera view down the right side of the car.

Adaptive cruise control will be available, rarely found in the Civic's segment.

The Civic lays claim to a 1972 origin, with uninterrupted production for 43 years.

Taillights run all along the rear deck lid, a design made feasible by LED lighting.

The center exhaust uses a geometric design, similar to cues in the European Civic model.

Honda will likely show the production version of its new Civic at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the fall.
