Cummins AEOS electric semi tractor is here for the short haul
The diesel engine guru previews the city-oriented all-electric big rig of the future.
Cummins unveiled its new AEOS Urban Hauler Tractor concept in Columbus, Indiana.
The Class 7 tractor trailer can carry 44,000 pounds.
The AEOS only has 100 miles of range, so it's designed for urban freight. However, it can charge in as little as one hour, so there's not much down time.
Cummins worked with auto industry gun-for-hire Roush Industries to develop the AEOS.
The AEOS employs drag-reducing tricks like low-rolling-resistance tires and cameras instead of side mirrors to improve efficiency.
Cummins says a production AEOS is coming for 2019, and it's also working on a model with a diesel range extender good for 200-300 miles of range.
