Where previous generations featured rear-wheel drive, the 2018 model comes standard with a version of the automaker's xDrive all-wheel drive system that's been tuned by its M division for optimal on-track performance.

BMW assures us that the M5 will still drift thanks to an ability to send up to 100 percent of torque to the rear axle's differential. However, there is a drive mode that locks it into a full-time rear-drive mode.

Under the hood is a 600-horsepower TwinPower Turbo gasoline engine that sends 553 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

BMW estimates that the 2018 M5 can hit 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds and go on to a top speed capped at 189 mph when equipped with the M Driver's Package option.
