2022 Toyota GR 86: More powerful and more precise

Toyota debuts a new GR 86 for 2022, pumping it up with more power and sharper handling. 

A bigger 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine powers the new 86, making 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.

Transmission choices continue with a standard six-speed manual or an available six-speed automatic routing power to the rear wheels.

To improve handling, the 86's chassis gains new front crossmember supports and a ring structure in the rear. 

The 86 also gets retuned shocks, springs and bigger antiroll bars. 

Premium versions of the new Toyota GR 86 also get bigger 18-inch wheels wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.

To keep weight in check, engineers gave the new GR 86 an aluminum roof and front fenders. This is in addition to the hood that was already made of lighter weight material on the previous model.

The GR 86's new cabin layout is simple with comfortable front seats, but the backseat remains cramped for adult passengers.

Toyota says the 2022 GR 86 will hit dealers in November.

Base pricing hasn't been announced, but Toyota promises the new 86 will begin below $30,000, including destination charges.
