2019 Mercedes-Benz G550 is better in all the right ways
Mercedes' iconic G-Class gets huge upgrades in refinement and drivability, but it'll still climb a mountain if asked.

The 2019 update is the most thorough redesign in the G-Class' 40-year history.
The 2019 G-Class only shares five parts with its predecessor: the headlight washers, sun visors, spare tire cover, door handles and a small bracket somewhere in the body structure.
Though it's known as the G500 elsewhere, the US-spec base model will be called G550.
The G550 uses Mercedes' awesome 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 416 horsepower, 450 pound-feet of torque and a 9-speed automatic transmission.
You can independently lock the front, center and rear differentials, meaning the G-Class is an absolute off-road monster.
This puddle? Piece of cake. The 2019 G550 can handle depths of up to 27.6 inches.
A new, independent front suspension and electromechanical steering rack make the G550 far nicer to drive than before.
Huge updates inside bring more luxury and better technology to Mercedes' flagship SUV.
It still looks super cool, and iconic G-Class elements like the chunky turn signals and exposed door hinges remain.
