2017 BMW 530i sedan: Bimmer's baby 7 Series

The 2017 BMW 5 Series sedan arrived in our garage looking a lot like a scaled-down 7 Series.

The two cars are very similarly designed both inside and out.

The smaller 5 features a smaller engine. The modular-design turbocharged engine displaces just 2.0-liters.

The 530i still packs a punch with 248-horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque which the 5 Series sends to the rear wheels via an eight-speed steptronic automatic transmission.

A variety of driving modes allow the pilot to electronically adjust the car's character between Eco Pro efficiency and Sport Plus performance.

On a tight corner, the 530i feels heavy, but still nimble enough. This large sedan feels better suited to freeways and sweeping country roads where its stability shines.

This generation is available with a plethora of driver aid features, including cameras covering a 360-degree view around the car, steering that helps keep the car in its lane and headlamps that steer around corners.

The 5er is more handsome than its been for generations, but something about the front end's proportions just don't sit right with me.

Look closely and you can see the radar sensors that help power the adaptive cruise control system and the autonomous emergency braking function.

Going big in the Bimmer is going to cost you. Though the 530i starts at around $52,000, our example packed on nearly $20,000 in option alone.
