2011 Ford Mustang V-6 (photos)
The 2011 Mustang has been launched at the 2009 LA Auto Show. I know what you're thinking, "Didn't Ford just release the new Mustang last year?"
I know what you're thinking, "Didn't Ford just release the new Mustang last year? How much could have possibly changed for 2011?" As it turns out, not much; but what changes there are are fairly substantial.
The Mustang's front end has received a few aerodynamic tweaks. Meanwhile, the underbody panels have been modified to reduce turbulence under the vehicle.
The biggest change happens under the hood. A 3.7-liter Duratec V-6 engine generates 305 horsepower while averaging 30 mpg on the highway, all without the benefit of direct injection technology. It does this with a combination of weight and friction reducing components and a variable valve timing system.
Boosting power without increasing control would be mad, so Ford has revised the spring rates and added a stiffer antiroll bar to the rear.
We have to admit that we're a little disappointed to see the Mustang on the outside of Ford's EcoBoost love-fest, but the new power plant places the 'Stang above the V-6 Camaro in power and fuel economy estimates.
Of course, the 2011 Mustang will be available with Ford's suite of cabin technologies, including Microsoft Sync, color changing lights, and the MyKey system that is designed to encourage safer teen driving by allowing owners to program the vehicle key using the driver's message center to incorporate features such as limited top vehicle speed and audio volume, a traction control system that cannot be deactivated, a persistent Belt-Minder safety belt reminder and various speed alert chimes.
Also available is the Mustang V-6 Performance pack that includes a lower geared final drive, the Mustang GT suspension package, bigger wheels, and a less intrusive stability control program. Toss in some better brakes and we may have the first Mustang V-6 engine that's better than the V-8 GT.
