Vonage offers free traffic reports
Customers in 26 states will be able to dial 511 for free regional traffic reports.
Vonage, the broadband telephone company, announced Monday that customers will now be able to dial 511 for free traffic reports. When Vonage customers dial 511, the local traffic report they are directed to will be based on the address they gave when registering for Vonage's 911 service.
In July 2000, the Federal Communications Commission designated 511 for use by the Advanced Traveler Information Service, which offers regional travel information. Currently, there are thirty 511 services operating in 26 states. Whether or not Vonage customers receive statewide or regional reports will depend upon what is already offered in those states. The U.S. Department of Transportation has published a full list of states that offer 511.
