The 2018 GMC Terrain brings design, diesel to Detroit
A new second-generation GMC Terrain arrives featuring a fresh design, a more refined interior and a trio of engine choices including two turbocharged gas engines and a diesel.
Available since the 2010 model year, more than 700,000 first-generation Terrains have found homes.
The Terrain's overall shape has been tweaked in the wind tunnel with efficiency and cabin quietness in mind.
The biggest news comes under the hood with three new engines choices including two turbocharged gas engines, and a diesel.
Base Terrain models get a 1.5-liter, 170-horsepower turbo four-cylinder, while those looking for more ponies can opt for a 2.0-liter, 252-horspopower turbo four.
Fans of low-end torque will like the 1.6-liter turbodiesel with 137 horsepower, but 240 pound-feet of twist.
Both front- and all-wheel drive models will be offered, with AWD Terrains coming with a FWD mode that decouples of rear axle when conditions allow for improved fuel efficiency.
For the cabin, refinement is up with aluminum trim, more soft-touch surfaces and more spacious center console with a new Electronic Precision Shift controller with buttons and triggers replacing the old-fashion transmission shifter.
Depending on trim, the new Terrain will feature a 7- or 8-inch infotainment system with a standard OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, as well as standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
On Denali models, the cabin is spruced up further with unique trim, front seat piping, a heated steering wheel, navigation, Bose audio and hands-free liftgate.
GMC has also expanded the Terrain's menu of safety features to include a 360-degree camera, forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane keep assist, Rear Seat Reminder and Teen Driver feature to let parents keep an eye on a kid's driving habits and dole out punishment if necessary.
The first-generation Terrain has been on sale since 2009, so this one is a little overdue.
It'll go up against cars like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Jeep Cherokee.
Gas engine options include a 2.0-liter I4 or a 1.5-liter turbocharged I4.
If you want some torque, opt for the diesel I4 with 240 units of twist.
The interior is... interesting. GMC replaced the shifter with a series of buttons on the center stack.
The area a shifter would exist is filled by cup holders and a terrain mode switch.
Like before, you can opt for the Denali trim, which ramps the fancy up to 11.
Infotainment screens come in 7 or 8 inches, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for both.
You can always opt for GM's 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot as well, if you desire extra connectivity.
