Virtual Arcade brings the Tribeca Film Festival to the next dimension

The 2017 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City features the second annual appearance of the Virtual Arcade.

Once inside 50 Varick Street, you'll see a huge demo room full of booths featuring different experiences you can sample with a VR headset.

Cameras were in no short supply as festival co-founder Robert De Niro made an appearance to sample selections at the festival.

Here's De Niro checking out "The Protectors: Walk in The Ranger's Shoes," a VR experience directed by Imraan Ismail and Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow, which is making its world premiere at the 2017 festival.

CNET's Scott Stein took a journey into the world of the chronically ill and disabled as he tried out "Unrest." This user-led VR experience is based on a documentary film of the same name that's also making its world debut here.

"Treehugger: Wawona" makes its North American debut today at the Tribeca festival. Put on the headset and backpack and you'll be able to explore the world of a giant redwood tree. The creators say the longer you hug the tree the deeper you "drift into treetime."

"Alteration" is described as a "poetic trip into the future," involving a dream study, a vampiric artificial intelligence, and apparently some sex.

"Remember, Remember" by Kevin Cornish features a love story set in the context of an alien invasion.

"Arden's Wake" takes place in a post-apocolyptic seascape and features a woman and her father, who live in a lighthouse.

CNET's Joan Solsman tries out "Bebylon Battle Royale," a more gamelike experience where players compete for fame and fortune in a status-conscious society.

"Tree," by Milica Zec and Winslow Porter, lets you experience the life of a tree's growth from seed state in a rainforest setting.

"The Other Dakar" is a 360-degree film by Dakar-based artist and designer Selly Raby Kane.

"Becoming Homeless: A Human Experience," was conceived as a project that would change the way we think about homelessness by putting us in the shoes of those who experience it.

"Blackout" is set in a New York City Subway, so naturally guests are invited to sit in a themed environment.

"NeuroSpeculative AfroFeminism" features what are said to be the first black female avatars, which were created especially for this experience. Guests sit in a virtual hair salon and are told a story through "speculative product design" and "cognitive research."

These and many more virtual-reality experiences await you at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival, which runs through Sunday, April 30.
