Giving the smart home a shower

The U by Moen Smart Shower not only allows you to precisely control the temperature of the water while you shower, but you can also control the shower from afar with an app. The four-outlet version pictured here costs $2,200. The two-outlet version (so for a showerhead and a single other nozzle) costs $1,160.

The control panel

As it turns out, app controls for a shower come in handy. Moen's app includes customizable presets letting you program different temperatures for different family members.

The digital thermostatic valve

Other than the control panel, the U by Moen Shower includes a digital thermostatic valve. This is why the U by Moen's price is so high. This valve calibrates the water temperature 50 times a second.

Not included

Unfortunately, the showerheads aren't included in the U by Moen price. Our whole setup cost $4,560 including the main showerhead, four body sprays, and a handheld wand.

Lots to install

You'll definitely want a plumber to install the U by Moen shower.

Remodel

U by Moen isn't a smart device you can just snap in place. It's best if you're already remodeling. Fortunately, that's just what we were doing at the CNET Smart Home.

Plumber needed

If you're looking for a premium shower, the U by Moen makes sense.

High-end shower setup

It's not that much more expensive than comparable non-connected controllers and precision valves.

App-enabled

Via the app, you can warm up the shower remotely, and the app will pause the water and notify you once it's ready to go.
