Sony made one of the biggest smartphone splashes of CES 2013 with its new Xperia Z, but ambitious players like Alcatel and Huawei aren't far behind.

LAS VEGAS--The Ativ Odyssey is the second Windows Phone for Verizon. It brings a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen with a WVGA resolution, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and a 5-megapixel camera with flash. Though announced last October, this is the first time we've been able to handle the device.

The Ascend Mate (left) gets Huawei into phablet territory. It has a whopping 6.1-inch HD display, an 8-megapixel camera, and a 4,050mAh battery. The D2 scales down to a 5-inch display. It also brings a 3,000mAh battery, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, and a 13-megapixel camera.

Alcatel shoots a bit higher with the Scribe HD. It comes with a 5-inch HD screen, stock Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, a quad-core processor, and an 8-megapixel camera.

Part of ZTE's new high-end Grand Series, the Grand S was just announced today at CES. Inside a design that promises "traditional Chinese style" are a 5-inch display, a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, a 13-megapixel camera, Android Jelly Bean, a 1,780mAh battery, 2GB of RAM, and Dolby Digital surround sound.

Alcatel Authority
Announced last week for Cricket, the Alcatel Authority is thin and lightweight, but its feature set is pretty dated already. It runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS, and it has a 1.4GHz CPU and a 5-megapixel camera.

Alcatel One Touch Idol and Idol Ultra
The Idol Ultra is one of the thinnest phones on the planet, measuring just 0.25 inch thick. It and its sibling, the One Touch Idol, feature Android 4.1 on a 4.7-inch display. They both have an 8-megapixel camera, though the Ultra is the higher-powered of the two devices with a dual-core processor. The Idol has a single-core processor.

Alcatel's One Touch Pop series is a family of entry-level Android phones. From left to right are the T'Pop (tiny), the S'Pop (small), the M'Pop (medium), and the X'Pop (large). LG Optimus Vu II
Though it wasn't announced at CES, the LG Optimus Vu II made an appearance. Like its Optimus Vu predecessor it has a 5-inch display, but LG doubled its RAM to 2GB and its integrated memory to 64GB. Also, it it now comes with a microSD card slot and it runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
