Samsung's 4K curved OLED TV, a printer that plays music, and more concepts (pictures)

At IFA 2013, Samsung has shown off loads of great-looking UHD TVs that use cutting-edge OLED technology. Plus some crazy printers that play music and are made of paper.

BERLIN -- Samsung announced it has a 55-inch 4K OLED TV under development in its press conference at IFA 2013 this morning, but didn't manage to show one off. Head over to Samsung's booth, however, and it's on full display. The picture is glorious.

OLED pictures look spectacular at the best of times, but add in the extra detail UHD offers and it's one heck of a show. It's just a concept at this stage, although the Samsung rep told me that it's just one or two years away from being in shops.

Mmm, OLED.

Also on show was a curved version of that 4K OLED TV. It's 55 inches, although this one looked like it might be a little farther away from production as it is encased in the display cabinet, making it difficult to see the curved on the screen. The Samsung rep told me that making OLED at 4K resolution is the hard part, rather than the curved screen, so there is no particular reason this wouldn't be on sale in the same one- or two-year time-frame.

Another concept was also on show: the "world’s first curved UHD TV" at 65 inches. No details were available on when, if ever, this will go on sale.

Here's the side of that curve.

Samsung is sure of two things: firstly that it wants to be the No. 1 laser printer vendor by 2017, and that it wants to be known for great design. So it's showing off a load of crazy concept printers to help tell that story. This is the Indie, a printer with a speaker and room for an iPhone, sorry, Galaxy phone dock.

Yup, it's a printer that plays music.

The Origami is a contender for my "product least likely to be made" award. It's a printer, made from cardboard, which Samsung says makes it "100 percent recyclable." As the sign on the stand says: "Most people use much paper by using printers, but do not consider what kind of impact this has on the environment." I'll eat my hat if this sees the light of day.

Here's how it folds together.

Now this is something I would actually buy: the Samsung Mate concept has pieces of coloured plastic that slide on and off so you can customise what your printer looks like. Begone gray boxes!
