Going in
Samsung held a special event to unveil or "unpack" its Galaxy S. Even before you entered the room, Samsung prepared you for something big.
A big screen
Omar Khan, Samsung's SVP of strategy and product management, introduced the Galaxy on a very large screen. At 4 inches, the Galaxy S has a sizable AMOLED display of its own.
Slim stuff
The Galaxy S is 0.389 inches (9.9 millimeters) wide. According to Samsung, it's the thinnest full-featured smartphone on the market.
Bright and bold
The Galaxy S' display is brilliant. It offers five home screens that you can customize to your liking. Below the display are two touch controls and an OK button.
From behind
The Galaxy S has just a camera lens and a small speaker.
In the hand
The Galaxy S is thin, but it has a nice feel.
Up on top
The Galaxy S has a 3.5mm headset jack and a Micro-USB port for the charger and USB cable.
Main menu
The Galaxy S' Touchwiz 3.0 main menu has a simple icon-based design. You get three pages for icons.
Keyboard
The Galaxy S has a large comfortable virtual keyboard. The control to the left of the "Q" key activates the Galaxy S' Swype feature.
Make a call
The virtual keyboard also has a spacious design. You can access your phone book and call log with one touch.
Daily Briefing
The Galaxy's S daily briefing feature is designed to be used each morning when you turn on your phone. It will show your local weather, personalized stock quotes, as well as news and calendar events for that day.
Very nice video
The phone's video player output resolution is 720p at 30 frames per second. The color and resolution are amazing.
Time for music
The music player has a simple design that supports album art.
Camera
The excellent display resolution is further visible in the camera application.
Photo gallery
The Galaxy has an attractive photo gallery application for the 5-megapixel camera.
Web browser
The Galaxy S has a full HTML Web browser. The phone supports double-tap and pinch-and-zoom multitouch.
Stocks
View stock prices by the day over a select period.
Weather
The weather application is bright and user-friendly.
Calendar
Samsung takes the Android calendar in a different design direction.
FM radio
We like the FM radio interface.
