The Trouble With Tribbles

"Star Trek" will mark its 50th anniversary in 2016, but a new book by artist Juan Ortiz will make you feel like you're back in the 1960s. "Star Trek: The Art of Juan Ortiz" reintroduces each episode of the original series as a time-worn period poster.

One of the most popular episodes during the show's three-year run has been "The Trouble With Tribbles," when Captain Kirk and his crew find themselves overwhelmed by furry creatures that multiply exponentially.

Operation: Annihilate!

This episode, the finale for the show's 1966-67 season, sees Kirk and the Enterprise crew fighting deadly parasites that drive their hosts to insanity. No wonder, since the critters resemble giant fried eggs.

The Devil in the Dark

One of the more silly moments of "Star Trek" comes when Science Officer Spock attempts a Vulcan mind meld with a giant blob that's haunting a mining colony in "The Devil in the Dark," repeatedly yelling, "Pain!" Ortiz's poster for this episode seems folded and creased.

Wink of an Eye

In this third-season episode, aliens from the planet Scalos invade the Enterprise but are invisible because they move around at a highly accelerated rate. Kirk soon disappears as well.

The Mark of Gideon

In "The Mark of Gideon," writers George F. Slavin and Stanley Adams deal with the issue of overpopulation. The planet of Gideon is literally crawling with people, and Kirk is abducted in a scheme to spread a deadly virus.

Dagger of the Mind

Known for the first appearance of the Vulcan mind meld, "Dagger of the Mind" is set at a rehabilitation center for the criminally insane, where staff uniforms feature a logo with a bird and a hand.

This Side of Paradise

Flowers play a central role in "This Side of Paradise," a first-season episode that originally aired in 1967. When Spock is sprayed by spores from the bizarre plants found on Omicron Ceti III, his logical demeanor is swept away, culminating in memorable fisticuffs with Captain Kirk.
