Quirky's Porkfolio brings home the bacon (pictures)

The Quirky Porkfolio is an app-enabled smart piggy bank with built-in Wi-Fi and a color-changing nose. Click through for more info on this likable novelty from the fringe of the Internet of Things.

As piggy banks go, the Porkfolio is pretty standard in size, and built from durable, rubbery plastic. This gives it the feel of a toy, which  makes sense, as it seems like a perfect smart gadget for kids.

To this end, you can rotate the pig's head and limbs, effectively rolling him over onto his stomach.

A spring-loaded mechanism within the coin slot can tell how big the coin you're depositing is, and therefore, what kind of coin it is. This is how the Porkfolio keeps track of exactly how much money you've put into it.

The pig's nose will also light up whenever you deposit a coin.

Open the Wink app, tap the pig's nose, and you'll be able to change the color of the Porkfolio's LEDs. You'll find additional settings beyond the main screen.

To get to your loot, remove the plug on the bottom of the bank -- but get ready to do a good deal of shaking.

You can set the Porkfolio to alert you if someone flips it over to get at your savings.

The Porkfolio has its own channel on IFTTT, but it was difficult to come up with a recipe we actually found useful.

The Porkfolio retails for $50, and there's a good chance that you can find it for less than that. No one needs a connected piggy bank, but we absolutely wouldn't blame you if you wanted one. We also think it'd make a great gift.
