Forget boring black. The Pop C9 is a smartphone rainbow

LAS VEGAS -- Lovers of lush color and Android affordability should keep an eye on Alcatel's Alcatel One Touch Pop C9 series. The smartphone comes in five different shades and two coatings.

C is for color

The blue-black and red models have matte, soft-touch finishes and full-body color. Meanwhile, the other tones flaunt their flavor on the backs of their white faces.

Camer and specs

More of a budget-focused, midrange phablet bound for markets like South America, the Pop C9 has an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera that records 1080p HD video.

Construction

It's a vibrant device, but seams like this show that the phone, while sturdy, isn't too fussy about sartorial perfection.

Width

I don't need a waifish phone to be happy, and while not the slimmest thing around, the Pop C9 never seemed overly bulky.

I Got an Early Look at Intel's Glass Packaging Tech for Faster Chips
Rahul Manepalli, right, Intel's module engineering leader, shows a glass substrate panel before it's sliced into the small rectangles that will be bonded to the undersides of hundreds of test processors. The technology, shown here at Intel's CH8 facility in Chandler, Arizona, stands to improve performance and power consumption of advanced processors arriving later this decade. Glass substrates should permit physically larger processors comprised of several small "chiplets" for AI and data center work, but Intel expects they'll trickle down to PCs, too.
