Nintendo New 3DS adds subtle but appreciated upgrades (pictures)

Meet the New 3DS -- very slightly different to the old 3DS.

Available in Japan only, we went all the way to Tokyo to bring you this review.

One of the big changes is the new clip-on covers. We got a lovely wood-grain model with embossed silhouettes. (No, it isn't real wood.)

One of the big new additions: two more shoulder buttons. ZL and ZR join the existing L and R.

Same cartridge slot, thankfully. Headphone jack front and center.

The 3D slider is still there on the display, but the dedicated Wi-Fi switch is gone.

Inside, you can see the new analog stick, hiding above the brightly colored main buttons.

The new stick doesn't feel very good, sadly. It's like a TrackPoint on a Lenovo laptop.

Without the clip-on skin, the system looks plain, to say the least.

Thankfully, Nintendo has released almost 40 different covers -- and we're sure there are plenty more to come.

The new display uses facial tracking to monitor your position.

The display is the single biggest improvement, and almost worth the price of admission alone.

It's not available in the US, UK, Australia or anywhere but Japan for at least a few months, so start saving your pennies!
